After a few minutes of this film....not knowing anything about who directed it, who wrote it or what it was about..going in completely "blind" ....I guessed it was written by a guy.
o love the independent style and, i absolutely adore adam scott and his acting style. Overall a very enjoyable dark comedy.

The Vicious Kind throws all that bunk out the window and commits 100% to its tropes – this is not a family where everybody gets along at the end of the day and we're just there to laugh and feel good about ourselves. Obsessed or not, a person with any decency wouldn't *SPOILER* screw his brother's girlfriend. This film had me laughing so hard and in a cheerful mood one minute, and then in a serious, dark mood the next. His little brother (Alex) comes to town for Thanksgiving and brings along his girlfriend (Emma).
About his ex-girlfriend and his dad Donald (J.K. Simmons)who tends to have issues of his own. There's a lot of crying being done here seemingly without reason as well, explicitly as means to "deepen" the characters and solemn the mood. Which brings me to the films next major problem - motivations. This movie is easily looked over, but is one that packs a solid punch.
Caleb slowly becomes interested in Emma because she looks exactly like the girlfriend who left him. Adam Scott is decent, but he could be real good if the script gave him some real emotion to play off of. "The Vicious Kind" isn't anything we've already seen before, but lead actor Adam Scott is definitely the main attraction to the film, often making the film incredibly enjoyable with comic relief and somewhat true but rude comments about the women race as a whole. Rarely do I give films a 10/10, but this is strongly deserving.

The Vicious Kind is mostly a character study of Caleb, a truck driver who turns into an angry, bitter insomniac after his girlfriend cheats on him. They seem like an odd couple because Alex is a small town, nice guy and Emma is more punk rock. 'The Vicious Kind' maybe a harsher title than the movie actually is, but doesn't take away from the excitement that Adam Scott's classic manic anger and ass-hole remarks deliver to the film. This very last screening of a winter's night did not attract an audience but one sole viewer.

imdb does list another film, “the nature of space & time,” but it is a short. fear expressed in ways and shades of anger in all its degrees. What The Vicious Kind attempts to do is mix comedy and drama, and what's left is blandness and confusion amongst the aud per what is supposed to be funny and what is serious. You can still see all customer reviews for the product. (I dont know why it's touted as a comedy, more serious than not) and whatever JK Simmons does, it's pure gold. The film definitely accomplishes what it's set out to do, which is to show that love is hurtful, consistently.
Inevitably, the film devolves into weepy catharsis, but with slick cinematography and colorfully cruel dialogue for Scott to chew up and spit at every member of this fine ensemble. Overall I love this movie mainly because capturing insomnia and how it really can affect someone. Adam Scott's performance is remarkable and his range as an actor is moving.
He thinks Emma is going to break Peter's heart because the way he feels now, all women are whores. An elegant study in character and the use of subtle good vs evil interplay in the presentation of a character to an audience. Estranged from his family, Caleb lives an isolated, but contented, life. I think this film could have easily turned out to be an aimless wreck if not for the last 7-or-so minutes, which perfectly ties in everything that happened throughout the film and even gives us a (realistic) "happy" ending. What initially seems like a [Neil] LaBute knockoff develops into its own rather interesting examination of men who mask pain with maliciousness. The pace of 'The Vicious Kind' is near perfect allowing for the tension between caleb and emma to build up to the climax, literally! The Vicious Kind is the kind of film that will play great to rabid audiences on the festival circuit, the problem being that now it has been released to the general paying public. Coming Soon. This movie is not the normal movie and I love it for that. But The Vicious Kind is by far the most alive and vigorous movie out of these, in which the characters seem to be living very sincerely and intense, even against their own will. Whew.
